Berlin - Dusseldorf International (DUS) is legally allowed to build six new parking positions on the western rim of the airfield, as the airport revealed in a press release on Friday. In a conclusive ruling the higher administration court (Oberverwaltungsgericht) declined the complaint of three neighbouring municipalities (Karst, Ratingen, Meerbusch) and a number of individuals. "We are glad to have the certainty of such a clear ruling backing our plans to expand our fast growing airport," the press release quoted DUS-spokesman Thomas Schnalke.
Plans to extend the ramp positions to the west of the airfield were revealed by the state of Northrhein-Westfalia in a comprehensive land administration plan (Flächennutzungsplan) back in 2015. It was controversial ever since. Schnalke argued that the impact to nature and population had been carefully examined beforehand and were minimal. Dusseldorf airport had lost fourteen of its outer ramp positions on its eastern edge in recent years. Building works for the new western ramp are to commence throughout this summer and shall take four years to complete. No details about the costs were revealed at this time.
Airport officials argue that the missing capacities hinder growth and complicate operations on the already confined airfield space. DUS is currently Germany's third largest airport and handles annually 23.5 million passengers.
