Germanwings Axes Berlin Connections

Berlin (Jul 3rd) - The Lufthansa subsidiary Germanwings has decided to axe two connections from its Berlin portfolio as of end of August 2014. As blog sources (airlineroute.net) reported Thursday the connections from Berlin-Tegel (TXL) to Birmingham (BHX) in the UK and to the Finish capital Helsinki (HEL) will seize being served as of Aug 31st.

On the route to England's second largest city the airline operated four round trips a week, while Helsinki had six weekly connections with the German capital. No spokesperson of Germanwings was to give further information on the route cuts. Hence it cannot be said for certain what will happen with the capacities of the Airbus A319/320 planes which were operated on the routes.

Analysts argue that especially budget carriers like Easyjet and Ryanair - that fly to Berlin (SXF) for much lower rates made the service unprofitable while the Helsinki route may simply not have had enough potential to support both Finnair and Germanwings services. Other may cite high costs and lack of capacity at TXL as a contributing factor. After Germanwings took over most of Lufthansa's non-hub-connections throughout the continent a phase of cooling down and consolidation seems imminent.
