Moskow / Dresden - Russia wants to sell 18 Suchoi 30 "Flanker-C" fighters to neighboring Belarus. As reported by different blogs Friday the planes were originally designated for re-export to India under a 2007 contract. The Indian Air Force - who has been a good costumer for Russian equiptment in recent years - instead will be provided with more sophisticated fighters. It was not revealed what type of aircraft will be exported to New Dehli. Some reports say it will be the Su-30K.
The 18 Su-30 in question have already been in the inventory of the Indian Air Force and returned to Russia after some 10 years of service in the southern Asian country for an overhaul, as a Russian newspaper reported Thrusday. Another Russian newspaper "Vedomosti" claimed the deal had been negotiated between the two presidents of the neighoring states Vladimir Putin and Alexandre Lukashenko during a meeting last week.
The Belorussian Air Force currently is said to be in a rather poor condition. The Air Arm of the dectatory country relies mainly on soviet era equiptment such as MIG 21 "Fishbed", MIG 29 "Fulcrum" fighters and MIG 23 "Flogger" attack aircraft. No details about the mode of financing or procurment costs were disclosed.
